Yussef Kamaal is a jazz-funk duo composed by the two south Londoners Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (also known as Henry Wu). Yussef Kamaal distinct sound represents a convergence between 70’s jazz-funk and the bass-saturated, pirate radio broadcasts from the british capital. Dayes is drummer for the afrobeat band United Vibrations, while Williams is a well-known producer, keyboard player and drummer. The pair crossed paths in 2007 while pursuing other musical projects, and meet again during the rehearsal of a William’s one-off gig for the Boiler Room, when they decided to form a band. Without pre-planned arrangements, Yussef Kamaal music was always spontaneously created, highlighting a strong chemistry between the two in a dynamic and experimental approach to the musical research. The duo played in a 20-minute set at Gilles Peterson's awards show who, once noticed their strength, signed them to his Brownswood label. With the Heliocentrics' Malcolm Catto engineering, the pair enlisted six other musicians -- including saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings -- to share their vision in a recording studio, resulting in the full-length Black Focus, issued in November 2016, which will be performed at Dancity Festival in the evocative Cantina Caprai.
